From Labuan to a
multilingual music career
Starting in Labuan, Karen’s music career expanded into the Mandarin market, Taiwan and Hong Kong. The timeline below highlights several important stages.
Labuan upbringing · university years
Born and raised in Labuan, Malaysia, Karen later studied accounting at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR). She took part in Malaysian Idol auditions in 2004 without advancing; a 2009 mStar interview records that she won first place at UTAR Talent Night 2005.[2][3][5]
A Malay-language breakthrough
From late 2006, Malay-language releases such as 《Cinta Hello Kitty》 brought her wider attention. In 2007 she released her first Malay album, Mulakan. A Malaysian Chinese singer beginning her recording career in Malay was unusual in the local music scene at the time; later that year she also released the Mandarin album 《表演 Showtime》.[2][3][13]
KAREN Unbreakable Spirit Online Music Show
On 17 July 2007, Karen staged the KAREN Unbreakable Spirit Online Music Show. The web concert was tied to Sunsilk’s “Unbreakable Spirit” campaign, for which she had been appointed ambassador; the campaign drew on her own life experiences and journey toward music to encourage young Malaysians to keep their spirits up. Contemporary promotion billed it as the first online music show by a Malaysian artiste. The show also marked a first for Malaysia’s music scene, with Karen becoming the country’s first artist to hold a web concert.[2][13][21]
《舔傷》 and its response in Hong Kong
When I’m Karen was promoted in Taiwan, Universal Music’s album introduction listed 《舔傷》 as a key ballad. Later in 2009, Karen performed the song as a challenger on Hong Kong’s The Voice. A later interview recalled that the performance scored above 90 points and caused a strong response in the studio; judge 趙增熹 described her as having a “voice from heaven” and later invited her to perform at his concert. The song therefore became not only a key ballad from I’m Karen, but also an important work in building Karen’s recognition among Hong Kong audiences and industry figures.[7][20]
I’m Karen wins Best Local Chinese Album at AIM17
In 2010, I’m Karen won Album Cina Tempatan Terbaik (Best Local Chinese Album) at the 17th Anugerah Industri Muzik (AIM17). The award marked an important recognition during the period when Karen’s music was expanding from Malaysia into the wider Mandarin market.[22]
Hong Kong: from television exposure to Cantonese releases
After challenge-stage appearances and performances in Hong Kong, Karen drew the attention of 趙增熹 and began working with him. Her first Cantonese single, 《做我自己》, was released in 2012; 《不愛你的時候》 and 《隆重而簡單》 followed in 2014, marking a new phase of her Hong Kong music career.[7][11]
Just Simple Karen Kong
On 24 February 2012, Karen returned to Malaysia for the Just Simple Karen Kong mini concert, sharing music with an audience of around 200. Rather than relying on elaborate staging or styling, the show centred on Karen’s voice with a four-piece live band, rearranged songs from her earlier releases and a new Cantonese song then in preparation. Karen described it as a gathering with her Malaysian fans as she began a new chapter.[23]
《時光隧道——踢館女將的十年》
On 15 February 2019, Karen presented 《時光隧道——踢館女將的十年》 at Jao Tsung-I Academy in Hong Kong. Through music, she looked back on a decade of singing across Malaysia, Taiwan and Hong Kong, performing earlier songs, unreleased material and her own compositions. It was also the first concert she personally organised after becoming an independent artist, making it an important retrospective milestone in her cross-market career.[24][25]
Embrace and its film songs
On 15 April 2021, Embrace (《等一個擁抱》), Karen’s first film shot in Hong Kong, opened in cinemas, with Karen playing the female lead Lau Yan-yuet. Music was central to this period: 《原來・未忘》 served as the theme song and 《一轉眼》 as an insert song; both were written by 徐偉賢. On 30 May, Karen performed 《一轉眼》 on TVB’s Jade Solid Gold “Golden Chart Prediction” segment and received positive votes from all 20 audience members, for a full score of 20.[14][15][16][17][18][19]
Metro Radio Hit Awards — Breakthrough Singer
At the Metro Radio Hit Awards 2021, Karen received the “Breakthrough Singer” award; the official winners list is available on Metro Radio’s website.[9]
Midlife, Sing & Shine! 2 — vocal mentor and supporting singer
In 2024, Karen took part in TVB’s Midlife, Sing & Shine! 2 as a vocal mentor. During the “Singer Support” round, she also performed 《征服》 with fellow Malaysian contestant 沈宗賢, who advanced to the final seven after the round. In an interview published by Hong Kong’s Electrical and Mechanical Services Department that year, Karen also described her role as a mentor who helped a contestant reach the top seven, reflecting the growing vocal-coaching side of her work alongside her performing career.[26][27]
Light and a new phase of Cantonese releases
Karen continued releasing new work after 2023. In a 2024 official interview she said she was preparing her first Cantonese mini-album in Hong Kong, while her current official Linktree presents the Light EP as a key release hub. In 2025, RTHK’s Canto Pop Power revisited her path from Malay-language music to recent Cantonese releases including 《人設崩壞》 and “Don’t Wanna Move”.[10][11][12]
